The Variables Which Influence to the Severity of Alcohol Dependence
Yu Nam-Jae

Abstract
The author performed this study to find out variables (demographic and alcohol drinking-related characteristics) which
influence to the severity of alcohol dependence. I interviewed 47 male subjects with alcohol dependence, using diagnostic
criteria of DSM-IV, who were admitted to three general hospitals and one large psychiatric hospital from July 15th 1997 to August 14th 1997. They completed the questionnaires that consisted of demographic and alcohol drinking-related characteristics and two relevant questionnaires (SADQ and OCDS). The results were as follows£º1) The severity of alcohol dependence was significantly higher in the no hobby group (p<0.05), the group below 19 years of age of first drinking (p<0.01), the frequently hostitalized groups (p<0.001), and the groups that had high total OCDS scores (p<0.01). 2) The severity of alcohol dependence was significantly (p<0.001) influenced by tendency of obsessive compulsive drinking.
